A teenager rebelling against his family and school seems headed for a miserable life until his older brother forces him to run track. Louis Zamperini sets a national high school record for the mile that stands for twenty years. He becomes the youngest American runner in the 1936 Olympics, finishing a stunning 56-second final lap of the 5,000 meters when a 70-second final lap was remarkable. As a volunteer bombardier against Japan, he survives 47 days at sea and proves unbreakable under brutal torture in a POW camp.
On one mission, his plane suffers 574 holes as it struggles to stay airborne for five hours before a crash landing. His crew must fly the air-unworthy Green Hornet, which is shot down, leaving him and two others to starve in a raft. His captors discover his Olympic…
