In 1941 as war engulfed Europe, director Howard Hawks presented Gary Cooper in Sergeant York (2 hours, 14 minutes). Far more than a notable cowboy actor in Fred Zinneman’s High Noon (1952), Gary Cooper starred in Frank Capra’s Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Otto Preminger’s The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell (1955), and William Wyler’s Friendly Persuasion (1956). These films remind us of American goodness and the cultural poverty of younger viewers who have never seen them. If politics indeed lies downstream from culture, these treasures reward viewing them and praising them to younger generations.
