During our semiquincentennial, we have only a few worthwhile films about the founding itself. Despite forgettable songs, the musical 1776 (1972) captures the key issues. We lack quality novels about crafting the Constitution, though Kenneth Roberts wrote superb historical fiction about the American Revolution. Conflict engages an audience: no conflict, no story. Physical conflicts work visually on screen, so action films such as Rocky and Gladiator abound. Conflicts relying chiefly on dialogue attract fewer viewers, though 12 Angry Men sustains our attention. The docudrama A More Perfect Union enlivens the arguments over whether 13 distinct states could compromise “to form a more perfect union.”
